=============

Our prayers and thoughts are with the surviving family members and friends
of the victims of today’s horrific and evil act. There are no words to
adequately express the sadness we share, as a community, with those affected.

I spent much of my day resisting efforts by those in the media to get me to
make a statement. Today’s events have nothing to do with me and no
connection to me. Yet TV news crews started coming to my home seeking
comments and my telephone rang nonstop with calls from those who were
desperate to score the ugliest of political points off of this tragedy. Now
my name is being mentioned in coverage and I have no choice but to respond.

Regarding whether I knew JT Ready, I did, as did many of us who have been
involved in Mesa politics for a long time. When we first met JT he was
fresh out of the Marine Corp and seemed like a decent person. He worked as
a telephone fundraiser for Christian and pro-life groups, he dated the
daughter of one of our District 18 members, and his attitudes and spoken
opinions were good and decent. At some point in time darkness took his life
over, his heart changed, and he began to associate with the more despicable
groups in society. They were intolerant and hateful and like so many who
knew him from before, I was upset and disappointed at the choices he was
making. I worked with others to have him removed from his local position
within our Republican Party because there has never been and will never be
any room in our Party or our lives for those preaching hatred. He was angry
with me and stayed angry with me, and it has been several years since I have
had reason to speak with JT.

In the past several years the local media has worked hard to try to tie me
to the JT Ready that preached hate, and that is nothing more than a lie.
When I learned the truth about him, I made it clear how wrong I thought it
was and I worked to remove him from our Party. Yet the lie is told and
retold over and over again. It is the ugliest form of politics. The most
radical groups I have ever belonged to are the Boy Scouts of America and the
Fraternal Order of Police, and in my 65 years in Mesa, as a law enforcement
deputy, as a judge and as the head of state agencies, I have never been
accused of mistreating anyone or of unfair conduct toward anyone I have
associated with, hired or supervised.

Finally, while I am frequently critical of the job the mainstream media does
in pursuing a political agenda instead of the truth, today’s behavior is the
most reprehensible that I have ever witnessed. On the very day that these
unspeakable crimes take place, editors and producers all over town are
making a concerted effort to make the story about a politician whose
conservative politics they disagree with.

Today, the Devil won and claimed the soul of one young man and the lives of
others, including the most innocent of all, a child. Our thoughts and
prayers are with the four beautiful souls that are now in God’s hands. We
pray that He accepts them into his kingdom and that He grants comfort and
solace to the friends and surviving family.

Russell Pearce lauds Prop. 200 court ruling

Arizona voters’ vindicated in important ruling protecting election integrity, says Pearce

MESA, AZ—Former Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce (R-Mesa), candidate for state senate in LD-25, today said the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit had made an important statement with national implications in its ruling on Arizona’s Proposition 200, written by Pearce and passed by a majority of state voters in 2004.

“In its ruling, the Court affirmed the belief of the Arizona people that it is not in violation of federal law to require voters to show their ID before voting,” said Pearce. “For once, the court has ruled bravely because this ruling directly contradicts the desperate political will of the Obama Machine, which very much wants to stop Arizona and other states from requiring ID in order to vote.”

Pearce said he disagreed with a second portion of the ruling, in which the Court sided against Arizona voters concerning proof of citizenship in order to register to vote.

“I believe we must go out of our way to protect the integrity of America’s elections, to avoid the fraud we see regularly in other nations, and which if not checked will rise up here in the United States,” said Pearce. “It ought to be common sense that proof of citizenship be required for voter registration, especially given the concrete evidence we’ve seen that illegal aliens are indeed both registered and voting. But common sense and America’s judicial system don’t always see eye to eye, and this is one area we’ll just have to keep working.”

Pearce said he hoped the Voter-ID portion of the ruling would spur quick legislative action in states in order to protect the vote in the 2012 elections.

“Whether in 2012 or beyond, whether by illegal aliens or by citizens with criminal intent out to corrupt the elections process, the requirement to show identification at the polls is a no-brainer to protect the most fundamental expression of freedom in America,” said Pearce. “And if there are citizens out there who can’t find a way to get a photo ID in this day and age, please write, call or email me. We want Americans voting, and we want them doing it legally.”

Pearce said every American today should be empowered to obtain valid identification.

“I will personally work with local, state and federal agencies to see seniors, minorities and any other segment of our population which might believe themselves to be so disenfranchised they cannot get a photo ID is connected with someone who can help,” Pearce said. “The alternative, to leave American elections open to rampant fraud, is a solution that only Washington could dream up.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Super Bowl, Tourism Growth show Arizona is a great place to visit

Senate President: “Let’s put an end to the myth about tourist boycotts”

(Phoenix, State Capitol)—Newly-released tourism figures and the choice of Arizona to host the 2015 Super Bowl is fresh evidence that Arizona is not seeing a downturn due to the state’s tough stand on illegal immigration.

National Football League owners voted recently to bring Super Bowl XLIX to University of Phoenix Stadium in 2015. The Super Bowl brings hundreds of million of dollars to our state’s economy.

“The benefits of the Super Bowl will be felt throughout the Phoenix area and the state,” says Senate President Russell Pearce. “We showed the world in 2008 we could host the big game here, and this vote was a strong endorsement of Arizona.”

“Critics of SB 1070 were shaking in fear that our tough stance on illegal immigration would cause visitors to turn their backs on our great state. Do you really think the NFL would award another Super Bowl to Arizona if this was the case? Let’s put an end to the myth about tourist boycotts. Look at the new numbers on tourism”, says President Pearce.

A report from Dean Runyan Associates shows travel spending in Arizona is up 7.9% from 2009. Gross sales at state hotels are up more than 12% from last year. Figures from Smith Travel Research show hotel occupancy in Scottsdale is up 4% from last year, and revenue per available hotel room up 8.6%.
